Top five Valentine’s Day gifts that give back

Need some last-minute Valentine’s Day gift ideas? Chocolate hearts are so cliché -- we can do better than that. Let’s show some love to the special people in our lives, and share God’s love with children and families in need around the world. That’s a win-win! Here are my top five ways to give -- and give back.

1. Thai bracelet with turquoise beads: $40

Donate $40 to World Vision’s Maximum Impact Fund, and get this gorgeous bracelet for your special girl (or, for yourself -- we won’t tell!)

The Maximum Impact Fund allows us to respond quickly to the most urgent needs around the world. And the best thing about the bracelet is that it’s made in a project in Thailand that helps protect vulnerable girls from exploitation. Seriously, this bracelet is a win-win-win!

2. T-shirt, necklace, heart, and card gift set: $60

This special gift collection from GIVEN, the apparel line inspired by World Vision, includes a pink burnout heart design t-shirt, a red tagua nut heart necklace, a carved soapstone heart, and a card -- all gift-wrapped in a red box.

The great thing about this gift set is that 30 percent of its proceeds go to World Vision projects that improve the lives of women and girls around the world. The necklace is painted with natural plant dyes and made from sustainably raised tagua nuts, commonly known as “vegetable ivory” because of their texture and color.

3. Give a gift card to support an entrepreneur: $25 - $500

So many hardworking entrepreneurs in developing countries want to provide for their families and improve their local economies. And they don’t want a handout -- they just need a small loan. But they wouldn’t qualify for a bank loan, and loan sharks would charge exorbitant interest rates.

That’s where World Vision Micro comes in. You could choose an entrepreneur to support in honor of your special someone, but I think it’s more fun to give a gift card so that person can choose whose loan to fund!

4. Stainless steel World Vision travel mug: $70

Have a friend or family member who loves coffee or tea? Perhaps someone who simply enjoys a warm beverage and likes the thought of making a difference?

With a donation of $70 or more to help where needed most, you’ll get this sleek stainless steel, 16-ounce insulated travel mug with a white enamel top and World Vision logo.

The donation to our Maximum Impact Fund allows us to respond quickly to those in need around the world, and as our thanks to you, we’ll send the awesome travel mug to give as a gift, or keep!

5. Become a sponsor: $35 per month

Become a sponsor today! This is one of those Valentine’s Day gifts that truly changes lives -- for the child and for the sponsor!

I have been a sponsor for eight years and have met two of my sponsored children. I’ve seen World Vision sponsorship at work in multiple countries. As a result, I can confidently say that sponsorship not only transforms the life of the sponsored child, but also the child’s entire community -- and we sponsors are blessed to be a part of it.

It’s a gift for a child in need, and a gift to yourself (or, you can give the gift of sponsorship on someone’s behalf).
