Why World Vision is in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s economy has been overwhelmed following years of political tension, unexpected weather events, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Political tension in Sri Lanka led to a number of economic challenges including inflation, daily blackouts, and a shortage of fuel, domestic gas, and other essential goods. Sri Lanka has been dealing with extremely high inflation rates since 2022 and the increased cost of living is impacting many communities, especially the most vulnerable. Combined with the impacts of the pandemic and severe weather events, many children and families face food insecurity and starvation amid the global hunger crisis. Like many countries, Sri Lanka is in need of food assistance, hygiene supplies, school supplies, and dry rations in order to improve living conditions.

World Vision is actively responding to Sri Lanka’s economic crisis in 30 locations by identifying communities with food insecurities, monitoring new developments, and providing real-time solutions. Over the last 10 months, World Vision has supported over 337,596 households and 755,546 people, as well as 7,737 pregnant and lactating mothers.

We never give up on people

World Vision child sponsorship looks at all the things that prevent children from surviving and thriving in their community, and then works with that community to bring all the pieces of the puzzle together to build a better life for all children. For sponsors, it’s a personal way to show God’s love to a child in need in a life-changing way.
