Greeting cards spell joy for sponsored children

Recently, while working on a video project in Malawi, I had the chance to see a group of young children eagerly waiting as World Vision staff members delivered their sponsors’ greeting cards to them. If you’re a child sponsor, you’ve most likely seen these cards in the mail. World Vision sends them to you throughout the year for special occasions — Christmas, Easter, your sponsored child’s birthday, etc. — so that you can sign them and mail them back to us. As they come in, we package them and send them to the appropriate World Vision sponsorship programs around the globe, where they are distributed to the children. At times, I’ve wondered whether it’s really a big deal for me...

Sponsorship — and a chance to visit Peru

Dear World Vision friends, family, and supporters, “Sponsorship takes love. Passion. Dedication. And partnership. By working together, we — World Vision, our sponsors, and the families we serve — can build healthy, self-reliant communities where children grow and thrive. Our child sponsors are an integral part of this partnership, and we’re so excited to share our work with them firsthand.” —Lana Reda, vice president of sponsorship & donor management You know how we’re always talking about sponsorship? Those stories are about the thousands of beautiful children...

A letter to the mothers and fathers of Bolivia

To the incredible mothers and fathers of Bolivia, This journey has been an opportunity to give a voice for the voiceless. To put a spotlight on the unseen. To shed light on what life is like through the eyes of Bolivians. I hope that I have shared and will continue to share your stories with the accuracy and thoughtfulness that they deserve. To the mothers who pray daily for the health and future of their children — you are the fortitude of your families. To the mothers who battle cultural discrimination because their children are born with disabilities — you are women of strength. To the mothers who took in children who were not their own because no one else...

Prayers for Japan from around the world

Three months ago on Saturday, a deadly earthquake and ensuing tsunami in Japan killed more than 14,700 people, leaving the country’s northeastern coastline devastated. Our colleagues in Japan have spent the weeks and months following the disaster organizing and implementing a full response plan, supported by the World Vision global partnership. As part of an international initiative to encourage quake survivors and those involved in relief efforts, children around the world who are supported by World Vision sponsors in Japan send their love and prayers. Children and sponsors in Japan’s tsunami zone have since received drawings, cards, and origami art messages from sponsored children in El Salvador, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Mongolia, Kenya, China, and Ethiopia. This post is a collection...

What I love about my mom

I always wanted to be just like my mom. When I was a little girl, I used to write her letters, telling her of the admiration I had for her beauty and grace, and that she would be my best friend forever. Just a few months ago, my mom reminded me of those letters. She told me just how much she adored those scribbled, misspelled notes from the 5- and 6-year-old me. Her favorite was one that I had so appropriately titled on the outside of the envelope, “What I love about my mom,” proceeding on the inside to name 20 of the things I loved most about her. Even as an adult, that list continues to grow. I add...
