“It is not an easy task to perform. I have [responsibility for] two lives at a time — the mother and the baby,” says Aklima Begum, 48. Aklima lives in Bangladesh and is highly respected in her community. Thanks to World Vision, Aklima was able to be educated and certified as a midwife. Midwifery is an extremely important skill for her community, since many families can’t afford to see a doctor or stay in a hospital. Although I wrote this last year, I feel it deserves a repeat-performance. I visited this family again recently and brought their daughter Lilly an actual malaria net, like those World Vision uses in Africa because I know the compassion she feels for those affected by malaria, an experience from a previous visit with her folks. She’s a busy 7-year-old now and couldn’t remember the entire incident, so I promised to find what I’d written last year and send it to her. I am usually a stickler on no-Christmas-stuff-until-Thanksgiving-is-done rule. I want to experience one holiday at a time — mixing pilgrims with Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree is just too much for me! But, this year, I caved. In November, I opened up my mailbox to find a new VeggieTales DVD — a Christmas Veggie Tales movie, “The Little Drummer Boy.” I couldn’t tell my kids to wait several weeks before we watched it, right? Right?! We had to sit down immediately and see what Bob and Larry were up to! And I’m so glad we did....
