Put yourself aside and lend a helping hand

Scott Smith from K-LOVE radio is traveling with World Vision to raise 1,000 sponsorships. They're flying around the world -- literally! -- traveling westward to visit communities in Thailand, India, Ethiopia, and Brazil.

This blog post and video come from Scott's visit to India, where his heart was broken for the people he met. Find out why.

The slums of Delhi, India, are perhaps the most heart-wrenching thing that I have ever encountered. I have had the privilege of traveling to many places, but in all of my travels, I have never encountered poverty like this -- streets flowing with open sewage, garbage rotting everywhere.

Families here need help! There is no welfare system or government assistance. These are the forgotten.

I know that this is where Jesus would be if we were here right now. If we aren’t willing to be here, too, then perhaps something is wrong with us. Perhaps we have grown callus to what Christ has done for us -- to the call to dedicate our lives to serving Him and “Going into all the world to share the Good News!”

Philippians 2: 1-4 says, “If you have gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if this love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care -- then do me a favor: agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the top. Put yourself aside and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.” (The Message)

The Bible addresses this sentiment over and over and over. The line that gets me is, “If you have gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if this love has made any difference in your life…forget about yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.” That cuts to the bone, because it’s pretty hard, as a Christian, to ignore what a difference Christ has made in our lives.

Thanks to World Vision’s work around the world, you have the chance to “lend a helping hand” to those who are most certainly the “least of these.” For what you pay to take your family out to eat at a modest restaurant, you can sponsor a child whose family lives off less than $1 or $2 a day.

Let’s forget about ourselves long enough to lend a helping hand! We can change the world, one child at a time!

Today, 19,000 kids under the age of 5 will die because they don’t have the basics that most of us take for granted, like nutritious food, clean water, and medical supplies. For what we spend on a soft drink each day, this can change. Your sponsorship of a child in need helps bring hope and a brighter future. Your sponsorship of a child fosters dreams beyond tomorrow.

There are 100,000 World Vision children in need of sponsors; we’d like to impact at least 1,000 of them. Please consider adding a child to your family today.
