As we approach the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia on Friday, we take a look back at the summer games of 2012 in London, and our friend and supporter Lopez Lomong who competed in the Men’s 5,000 Meter.

This photo series and video show Lomong running this past summer with Team World Vision in the Hood to Coast relay event in Oregon.

In 2012, we told the story of Lopez Lomong, a long-distance runner who competed with Team USA in London, and carried the flag for the U.S. team in Beijing. Every Olympic athlete has an amazing journey that brings them to the games, but Lomong’s is even more so … born in South Sudan, he was abducted by rebels at the age of 6.

Our blog series from 2012 shared Lopez Lomong's journey – from life as a lost boy in Sudan, to finding a new home in America, to his rise as an Olympic athlete.

But his journey is far from over.

As a World Vision supporter, Lomong runs with Team World Vision, raising money for clean water in Africa. And this past summer, he ran with our relay team in Hood to Coast – a 12-person, 195-mile relay race from the top of Mount Hood in Oregon to the Pacific Ocean – raising money for hope in South Sudan.
