In 2000, the world's countries united with a common objective: to eliminate extreme poverty. They set eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) along with a deadline of December 31, 2015.

Today, we’re 500 days away.

After thirteen and a half years of work toward these goals, more girls are attending school, mothers are receiving the medical care they need, and more children are celebrating their fifth birthdays. The MDGs are the most successful anti-poverty push in history!

Some targets have been achieved and, through the work of the United Nations, governments, and organizations such as World Vision, significant progress has been made toward achieving all eight of the goals.

The MDGs have been a catalyst for improvement in the lives of millions of the world’s children, bringing together governments, the international community, civil society, and the private sector to achieve concrete goals for community development and to eradicate poverty.

World Vision and other humanitarian agencies embraced the MDGs as a blueprint for achieving a brighter future for all children. Steps like getting all children into school, keeping them healthy with basic medicines and clean water, and protecting their rights are the keys to ending extreme global poverty.

In particular, World Vision is focusing our work with families and communities around the world in a number of specific ways: promoting health and access to quality care, strengthening families’ ability to improve their nutrition, improving access to clean water and quality basic education, ensuring improved household incomes (with access to markets, information, and financial services), offering disaster relief, and helping communities engage with local decision makers to monitor and demand quality services.

December 31, 2015 may be a deadline, but it does not mark an end. The momentum gained over the course of 15 years can continue to push the world forward in the fight against poverty.
