Last holiday season, American Idol winner Kris Allen visited Zakale Creations in Kenya — a small business that hand-crafts new items out of old ones and brings them back to life. Today, we challenge you to do the same!
Today’s challenge: Make a handcrafted gift for someone.
“He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’” —Revelation 21:5
Making old things new
Our first stop was to visit the Huruma slums in Nairobi, home of John Mucheru from Zakale Creations, who offered some memorable encouragement: “If God gives you a talent, that talent doesn’t belong to you.”
John’s wisdom was appropriate, considering the gift that Kris was giving by spending the holiday season away from his family in order to use his talents and influence to bring help and hope to those in need.
This year, as a tribute to Zakale Creations and their mission to recycle and bring things back to life, we want to recycle John’s story so it can bring joy to your lives.
Today’s challenge mirrors the sentiment of “Zakale.” We encourage you to make a handcrafted gift for someone. Bake some cookies, find a project on Pinterest, or even draw something on a napkin. Recycle the resources God has given you, add your own creativity, and bring joy to others. Make sure to comment below on what you ended up creating!

When you purchase a giraffe Christmas ornament for someone special, you also make a donation to help where most needed! Hand-made from recycled materials by Zakale Creations artisans in Kenya, this is one of our Gift Catalog items that gives twice.
