Today’s challenge: Share with us a Bible verse that brings you joy in the comments section below!

Here's ours:

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." –John 10:10 (NIV)

What you share is what you value

As World Vision staff, it has been on our hearts this holiday season to share joy. In the midst of pain and sorrow – hunger, disease, disaster, exploitation, economic injustice – we must remember to celebrate the impact that we can make and that we have made. Every dollar entrusted to us is multiplied and amplified through our 44,000 dedicated staff around the world. It's true that we must share the statistics and stories of need around the world, but we must intentionally share the joy of lives transformed as well.

If we don't value joy, then the problem of poverty will never be solved. We can provide all the clean water and food in the world, but without sharing the joy that comes from God's love, true transformation will never occur. There would not be "life in all its fullness."

So that's what we want to do this December. Joy isn't about simply giving money so someone else can share it, but about building it into the fabric of our everyday lives.

We want to invite you into a season of sharing joy.

After a recent church meeting, my housemate gave me a fascinating compliment. He told me that I take criticism well.

I had just announced that I planned to transition from official leadership of our Young Adult group into a supporting role, freeing up my time for other ministry-related activities. The feedback I heard over and over again was the refrain, "I think that's a good idea because your heart just wasn't in it."

It was true. I knew that a pastoring role isn't what God has designed me for, but that's not what anyone wants to hear. As a human with emotions and desires of verbal affirmation, my preferred response would have been understanding of what I’d put into the group, grateful for that commitment.

There was no "thank you."

So while I was disappointed that none of my friends encouraged me, an interesting thought crossed my mind. I realized that maybe nobody said "thank you" because what I gave to the group isn't what they really wanted from me. God used me in many ways for this ministry, and I don't regret what He did through my life. But what my friends saw was that my heart wasn't in it. I was sharing certain values, but not necessarily what they valued. From their perspective, I was sharing burden, not excitement.

For me, that was an incredible lesson to learn: What you share is a direct reflection on what you value.

I knew that a new group needed a vision and consistency, so that's what I gave. As time went on, that consistency turned into a burden, and in the end that's what people saw. So here's a question for you: what do you value?

Do you, like I did, value the completion of strategic tasks? Or do you value sharing God's love in a personal way? I'm not saying we should not have vision and consistency, but we do need to be intentional about how we share ourselves. That's why John 10:10 is such a powerful verse. "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." God wants us to have a full life, a life of joy. In turn, we should share that joy with others.

Every day from today until Christmas, we’ll be posting a new blog challenging you to share joy with the people around you. Designed as an Advent calendar (which you can print out to help track your progress), check back for each day’s new challenge and story, and share with us how you’ve shared joy by commenting!

A verse that brings me joy is:
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. (Romans 8:28 NLT)
Thank you for sharing your insights about joy and sharing it with others. World Vision gives me joy in knowing that there is an organization that is working for people around the world to not only make life better in providing basic needs, but spiritual needs that are, ultimately, the most important.

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Deuteronomy 31:8

1 Peter 4:8. "Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins."

    Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)
Thou wilt keep him in perfect whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusteth in thee.

    Psalm 62: 8
Trust in him at all time ;ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Se'-lah.

    Isaiah 40:28-29

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.

Romans 3: 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. 27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

    Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

    Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he well be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

    Matthew 25:35-40
    New International Version (NIV)
35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

    Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    My favorite verse is
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phil. 4:13

Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.
    2 Corinthians 2:14

    Philippians 4:6-7

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

    Psalm 103:10-12
He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

    Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

    Revelation 22:17

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God" - Ephesians 2:8 (ESV)

"I lift my eyes up to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth." Psalm 121:1-2

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10 NIV)

I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1, 2 NIV)

    Psalm 103:8
The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
Knowing God is compassionate brings great joy to me.

    Psalm 37:4
Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

    Psalm 32:8 NLT
The Lord says, "I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Psalms 90:12

God shows His love for us, for while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

    3 John 1:4 NIV

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

    Ephesians 2:10 The Voice

For we are the product of His hand, heaven's poetry etched on lives, created in the Anointed, Jesus, to accomplish the good works God arranged long ago.

    Colossians 3:12
Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Mark 2: 10-11: but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!

I love Psalm 139.....It encourages my heart to know God thought of me before I came to be,loved me then, loves me now, and knows me fully. Thanks be to God.

    Psalm 126:3
The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad!

    1 Corinthians 2:9
What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived - the things God has prepared for those who love Him.

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

    John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

    Ephesians 2:4-7
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus

    Zeph. 3:17
The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you. He will quiet you with His LOVE and rejoice over you with singing!

John 3:17 - "For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."

    Exodus 3: 9-10
"And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

    Ephesians 5:25 KJV

    Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
