Every 60 seconds, malaria claims another victim.
A single mosquito bite can be a death sentence for people who lack access to medical treatment. What makes malaria deaths particularly tragic is that they are fully preventable -- and some of malaria’s most common victims are children under 5.
This is a sobering reality, but we have reason to look to the future with hope. While the consequences of contracting the disease can be devastating, preventing it is simple and inexpensive.
Right now, you can do something to help children who are threatened by malaria.
The best way to fight malaria is to prevent it. A simple $6 bed net can help save lives and break the cycle of this disease. Your church, school, or small group can play a part in ending this child killer by hosting a Malaria Sunday. This is your chance to let your community know about the injustice of malaria and do something about it. We want to equip you with the tools to provide life-saving bed nets to children in need.
Malaria kills nearly 2,000 children every day, making it one of the world’s top child killers. Expectant mothers, babies, and children under 5 are especially vulnerable. (Photo: Michelle Siu/World Vision)
Malaria Sunday is designed to be a church-wide activity that takes place during your normal weekend service, but it can be adapted to work in any group environment, Sunday or not. Start a conversation. If you are looking to get your church involved, talk to your pastor. If it’s your school, connect with a teacher or advisor. What’s important is that you let them know you want to be involved!
Not sure where to start? We’ve drafted a letter you can forward (.doc file) to let them know you are interested in hosting a Malaria Sunday.
Here are the next steps:
- Pick a date. Find a date that works for your group. Malaria Sunday can be as easy or involved as you want. You can design your entire service around Malaria Sunday, or take 15 minutes to let your congregation know how they can make a difference.
- Sign up! We will provide you with everything you need to host a Malaria Sunday -- videos, fast facts, a sample bed net, and much more -- all for FREE.
- Brainstorm. How will your group join the fight in the war on malaria? Set a goal for a number of bed nets you want to provide. For example, you can purchase one bed net for each person in your group. You can take a collection for the cause, or organize fundraisers. The possibilities are endless. We have seen people of all ages find creative ways to purchase bed nets. Little kids are setting up lemonade stands, teenagers are asking for more chores, moms are skipping their lattes twice a week -- all to bring life-saving bed nets to people in need.
Be sure to take photos and videos at your event! Send them along with stories of how Malaria Sunday has impacted you to email@example.com.
