Experiments in empathy — a new year’s resolution

My 4-year-old twins love to play “pretend house” — especially if I play along as their baby. “You has to take a nap, OK, baby?” Jorie said to me. Obediently, I climbed into her crib. She piled blankets, stuffed animals, and dolls on top of me. “Now go to sleep wif no more talking!” Jorie commanded in a voice that sounded spookily like my own. I pretended to cry. The twins chuckled. “Baby, go to sleep!” Jasiel commanded. “NO!” I shouted. The twins burst into laughter. I kicked my feet and pouted. Jasiel fell to the floor she was laughing so hard. Her uncle, in the words of Mariela’s mother, “es muy malo.” Very bad–meaning, his special needs are severe, overwhelming for a family already entrenched in deep poverty. Mariela wouldn’t let go of me. She held my hand, asked me to draw pictures for her,...

[Bolivia bloggers] Day 2: I’ll fly away

We’re just a few minutes away from boarding our plane to Bolivia. I’ve taken my high-altitude medication and am feeling slightly jittery. I also have to pee like every 15 minutes–which should be fun on the plane, yes? The funny thing about traveling is that, well, unexpected things happen. My carry-on was too full and I had to re-shuffle my suitcases at the last minute while standing next to the ticketing counter (oh, my poor little tidy Clothing Bundles!!)....
